New encryption (TLS) for e-mails

Starting today (6/16/2020), our provider will start adjusting the TLS versions on our mail servers. This means that the security level of the encryption is increased. Most email programs should have no problem with this and continue to work seamlessly.

Details (for the technically interested)

During customization, the TLS 1.0/1.1 version is deactivated and automatically switched to the TLS 1.2 version. Your mail program usually uses the already activated version of TLS 1.2.

What role does TLS play in email communication?

Transport Layer Security (TLS), as a further development of SSL, protects the transport path of e-mail communication from sending by your e-mail program to receipt by the addressee. If you have set up your mailbox accordingly, the data transmitted over the Internet using this protocol cannot be read in transit.

What does that mean to you?

Please check the e-mail programs you use for compatibility with at least TLS 1.2. In general we recommend to use the operating systems Windows 8.1, Windows 10 or MAC OS X in at least version 10.12 as basis. If you are using Linux, we also recommend that you check compatibility. Please also check older mobile phones, tablets and other email-sending applications and update email programs and operating systems to the latest version.

What happens if you don’t update?

If your e-mail program does not support TLS in version 1.2, you will not be able to retrieve your e-mails encrypted. It is not recommended to switch to an unsecured connection, especially if you are subject to the encryption requirements of the GDPR. If you can no longer access your email, you can still access it through the webmail access provided.

In order to keep the inconvenience for you as low as possible, we carry out the changes early in the morning from 4:00 am. There will be service interruptions of about 30 minutes, during which you will not be able to retrieve e-mails or send them without errors. Incoming e-mails during this period will of course be temporarily stored and regularly delivered after completion of the work.
